The gingerbread as we know it today has already come a really long way. Originally, they come from the Orient and ancient Egypt. In ancient times, various exotic spices were used to flavour small pastries. 

Together with many other cultural assets, these delicious baked goods also found their way to Europe. In the Middle Ages, however, people in this country did not know too much about spices such as cinnamon, cloves and aniseed, which is why they were all equally called pepper. This is where the name of the little cakes comes from. 

Gingerbread, spice cake or honey cake?

In fact, many of our customers ask this question: What is the right name? The answer: It depends on the region you are in. But in principle, all three terms refer to the same treat. The gingerbread is probably the oldest name and the spice cake the slightly corrected version of it.

The honey cake in turn refers to another ingredient of the pastry. Because sugar used to be expensive, honey was often used as a sweetener. This was important to round off the various, sometimes pungent, flavours. 

By the way: Did you know that in the Middle Ages gingerbread was also used as a medicine? The herbalists knew about the different beneficial effects of the individual spices such as cloves or cinnamon. But this use has since been lost again. Nowadays it is above all one thing: delicious!
